Afraid of someone who shares your home, your bed, your life?
You are not alone…this is the real life nightmare for countless women and children all over the world. Domestic Violence happens in every society, regardless of social and economic grouping. There is no 'type' of woman it happens to, or 'type' of home in which it occurs.
Domestic Violence is not only physical assault: There are many ways to hurt somebody without hitting them. Sexual, mental and emotional abuse are as common, as terrifying and as damaging as physical abuse. But they are harder to see, and may be more difficult for some women to recognise.
Most incidents of Domestic Violence involve one person… usually a man… being violent to another person… usually a woman. Domestic Violence can be present in lesbian relationships.
Although Braintree Women’s Aid accepts some Domestic Violence happens to men, we are committed to the support of women and their children only.
For women suffering domestic violence, this website is about safe refuge and other support services which may just give you the help, advice and encouragement you need to change your life.
BWA is a registered charity providing safe, comfortable accommodation and ongoing support for women and their children escaping domestic violence.
The refuge has been operational since March 1998, during that time we have provided a service to hundreds women and their children.
In the refuge, trained professional staff will work in a sensitive and non-judgemental way to help women identify their options and support them to gain power and control over their lives and their futures.
